Google BERT

BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) is a natural-language processing model Google began using in 2019 to understand the context and nuance of words in a query — especially prepositions and word order that change meaning.

BERT reads words in relation to all the other words in a sentence, not one by one, so it grasps how small words like "to" or "for" change intent. That let Google interpret longer, conversational queries far more accurately than keyword matching allowed.

Like RankBrain, BERT is about understanding language, and the same transformer technology underpins today's large language models. There's nothing to optimise directly; the win is writing naturally and clearly so your meaning is unambiguous.

For content, BERT rewards writing for humans: complete, well-phrased answers that address the real question. This is the foundation that also feeds AEO and AI citations, where clear language helps machines extract and trust your content.
