Google RankBrain

RankBrain is a machine-learning system introduced by Google in 2015 to better interpret search queries — especially new or ambiguous ones — and match them to the most relevant results. It was Google's first major use of AI in ranking.

Rather than matching keywords literally, RankBrain helps Google understand what a query means, connecting unfamiliar phrasings to known concepts. It's part of how Google moved from strings to meaning, working alongside language-understanding models like BERT.

For SEO this reinforced a durable shift: optimise for topics and intent, not exact keyword strings. Comprehensive, well-structured content that genuinely answers the underlying need tends to satisfy RankBrain better than pages tuned to a single phrase.

You can't optimise for RankBrain directly, and there's no dial to tune. The productive response is strong content aligned to search intent — which also supports entity SEO and being understood by AI answer engines.
