Structured data (schema)

Structured data is standardised markup — usually schema.org in JSON-LD — that describes a page's meaning to machines: that this is a product, an FAQ, an article, a person. It powers rich results in Google and helps AI systems interpret and cite your content.

Search engines read text, but they infer meaning better when you state it explicitly. Adding Product, FAQPage, Article, Breadcrumb or Organization schema tells Google exactly what each element is, which can unlock rich results — star ratings, FAQ accordions, prices, sitelinks — that make a listing stand out and lift click-through.

The same markup matters increasingly for AI search. Clear structured data helps large language models and answer engines understand entities and relationships on your page, supporting Answer Engine Optimization and Generative Engine Optimization. It's part of making content genuinely machine-readable.

Implement it in JSON-LD (Google's preferred format), keep the markup consistent with what users actually see, and validate with the Rich Results Test. Marking up content that isn't visible on the page violates Google's guidelines and can cause a manual action.

Not directly. Schema doesn't boost rankings on its own, but the rich results it enables can significantly raise click-through rate, and it helps search and AI systems understand your content — both of which support performance.
