Web analytics tools

Web analytics tools measure what happens after the click — traffic sources, behaviour and conversions — and how your site performs in Search before the click. Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console are the free essentials, and they answer different questions.

Analytics is how you know whether SEO is actually working, rather than guessing from rankings. The two tools split the picture cleanly: Search Console shows how you appear in Google and what people search before they arrive, while GA4 shows what they do once they land. You need both, and connecting them turns two half-pictures into one.

The tools

Google Search Console

Search Console is Google's own free tool showing how your site performs in Search, straight from the source: the queries you appear for, your impressions, clicks, average position and click-through rate, plus indexing status and technical issues. Because the data comes from Google rather than a third-party estimate, it is the ground truth for what you actually rank for — the starting point for almost every audit and content decision. It also flags coverage problems, manual actions, Core Web Vitals and structured-data errors, so it doubles as an early-warning system. Every site should have it verified before anything else.

Google Analytics 4

GA4 is Google's event-based analytics platform for web and app, used to measure where visitors come from, what they do on the site and which actions turn into conversions. Its event model is more flexible than the old session-based Universal Analytics but also less intuitive, so it rewards a bit of setup — defining the events and conversions that matter to your business. For SEO it answers the question Search Console cannot: once organic visitors arrive, do they engage, convert and come back. Pair it with Search Console so you can follow a query all the way from impression to conversion.

How to choose

This is not an either/or — both are free and complementary, and a serious site runs both. Use Search Console for queries, impressions, indexing and technical health; use GA4 for on-site behaviour and conversions. Connect them so a keyword can be traced from impression through click to conversion, which is where the real insight lives.
